To those who are acquainted with Bentham's "Introduction
to the Principles of Morals & Legislation" the present work will
offer little that is new – & perhaps there are some who will think
its contents have been already anticipated & its usefulness utility superseded
by that masterly monument of analytical & logical power. But
for universal acceptance the principles therein laid down assume too much the shape of
axioms & certainly wanted– as the sequel inconsiderable circulation of the
Volume has evidenced the attractions of popularity. The present
works whose especial object it is to approve itself to the
general reader is more desultory & diffuse – & seeks to win its
way by a style less stern & severe. The former was written for
the meditation of the Philosopher profound thinker – this, looks to a wider
& more useful popular – but less elevated field sphere of ambition usefulness.
Besides the "Introduction" has a more extensive & exhaustive
character & was principally is mainly occupied with a development of
the true Legal principles of Legislation – which can hardly
interest mankind at large. In the Volume before us nothing it is not intended
to enter on the inquiries of jurisprudential science. Our
concern is with Private morality – & that has a claim to
the attention of every body – on every occasion – in which
thought, – word or action is engaged.
