Out of this direction assumption of authority has grown the word obligation † the hope from the Latin verb, obligo,
to bind, – while such a cloud of misty obscurity has gathered round the term that
whole volumes have been written to disperse it, – and the obscurity notwithstanding has continued as
dense as before – & it can only be dissipated by bringing in the sunshine light of utility with
its pains & pleasures & all the sanctions & motives which spring out of them. [†The hope obligation
does not apply to that part of the field of Duty which is about to be reviewed – the
moral & religious sanctions do apply – & they will be examined in detail.]
