In respect to future contingent pleasures and pains so far is
the situation of the individual himself in a sole was favourable to the
business of forming a just estimate of its vaue, than
that of a an observant bystander, then it is apt to be much less favourable. Why? – because to the minds eye of the mind as well
as that of the body, men remote agents are apt to
be by less remote, and more especially by present
ones.

When, for example, in the character of an to action,
pleasure in any shape is in view, what observe in this respect
is the consequence? If it be of such a nature
that the enjoyment of it is likely to be with followed by
pains a more than equivalent mass of pain, nothing is
more ordinary than that for the elements of which that mass
is composed to be undervalued fewer or more of them, or to keep be kept themselves
out of sight.

Suppose it for example to be the case of a pleasure, to the
enjoyment of which is are attached or the character of a
more or less probable consequence, are attached the pains respectively
belonging to the few sanctions, any one or more or all of
them. Thus, for its incentive or incitation cause from the
not requisite to the production of the pleasure, has the
prospect of that pleasure: while for its restrictive,
it has the sum of all these probably as certainly
. These Of them the actual value may be to any amount
be greater than that of the pleasure. But while to by to the yes of persons
they are sufficiently present, to the eye of the individual himself
they are, one or more of them either not present at
all, or present in a degree of value and value must in to any degree inferior to that which to one properly belongs to them.
