It is for him to consider upon what terms he will be able after such
a declaration to keep with the notions fashionable among Churchmen.
As for those who have entered into that plan of life which leaves them
not at liberty to follow their own judgements we know what to expect from
them. Few men, indeed none of the description just alluded to have
strength of mind to deal treat with equal simplicity and good faith.
They will naturally divide themselves into three parties. The 1st.
will maintain that (it is no matter whether notions here stated are in
Scripture) they may have that tendency to the prejudice of Society the temporal happiness that
is imputed to them, but that it signifies nothing on comparison; for
that the inculcating such notions is not such a presumption against that
degree of benevolence and justice in a supreme being which the allotment
of a future state of happiness for the good requires to exist – not I say –
presumption so strong as to stand against the positive promises in the
Scripture. The second will maintain: the notions in question are not
prejudicial to Society in the manner charged. The third will confess that
