Utility – Truth

In order to find out
either of them, the
surest way is to search
for utility: † has more
in it

Now since Utility and Truth (ever) conceding: we can
better easier more surely find out what is useful, because that ( is matter) of
experience, than what is true because that (is matter) of conjecture

Deep Thought.

The merit of a deep thought consists not in its being.
A deep thought to have merit must be such, not that
the reader must descend deep into the well truths of truth
to catch it, but that the writer must have gone deep,
to find it out, in order to spread it out for the reader upon the Surface.
Depth of writing thought, when a merit, consists not in the
writers sending the reader deep after a thought, but in
his having been gone deep for it himself.

Notwithstanding the truth of the observation that indefinite is greater
than definite, the pains of Hell make a weaker impression than
those of the present life.

The indefinite must be something known in Kind, tho' unknown
in degree. Now these are not known in Kind.
Instead of appearing as infinite, they are appear as nothing; because
they are not the same with the sensation they are to produce in any thing that we know to befind by experience to be painful.
They are indeed represented as painful; but they are represented as such
which as that there is nothing in them to which our ideas of what is painful can agree.
Fear is calculated to deter – make one motionless. The word deter imparts as much from actions
meant to be prohibited omitted: but it must be hope that can invite to stimulate to
action activity

Human Laws can give efficacy to the sanctions (expedients) which they
adopted (make those) answer their purpose by explaining themselves with
precision upon all these points.
