Ch. 2
Of propriety, as between self regarding or Prudence on the one
hand, and Probity and Beneficence taken together, on the
other.
At the outset an objection presents itself: and that
an objection applying to every thing that follows or can
follow. It shall present itself be allowed to present itself in its full
force.
According to you the principle which presents establi
in the case of every nation establishes as the ground
and measure of the propriety its conduciveness influence of repugnance to
the greatest happiness of the greatest number is the same
and only true principle.
But likewise on the other hand according to you, it is only in
by a regard for his own happiness well-being, and that alone
than on every each occasion a man's conduct will actually
be governed.
Lastly also In like manner according to you, each man, being
of ripe years and sound an ordinarily sound constitution of mind, at all times is better
in the question what curse of conduct to a pleasures they are the enjoyment of which
and what pains they are the exemption of which
will, at any rate at the moment in question will be most conducive to his well being.
