Oaths –Falsehoods – Species of
Falsehoods are
1st. Malicious Falsehoods. These a man should avoid for the sake
of others: they are flagitious.
2d. Interested Falsehoods. These should be avoided for his own sake –
they are mean.
3. Falsehoods to excite astonishment, which are properly a species of the
2d. These also he should avoid for his own sake.
4. Falsehoods of humanity – to avoid hurting the amour propre of
others. These are innocent and laudable, under the caution not to be so
lavish of them as to+ + give cause to suspect a general indifference to veracity, impair his own reputation for veracity. Such are
falsehoods to repel advances to intercourse.
5. Falsehoods of necessity. Such as must be used to Madmen.
6. Falsehoods of self-defence against lawless violence.

Lye 𝓧 Equivocation.
An equivocation is to be preferred to a lye in this respect, that it gives
room to hope that in instances no terms can be found of ambiguity
fit for composing an equivocation, truth may be told.
An equivocation is a falsehood in ideas, not in words.
A Lye is a falsehood both in ideas and words.
The having recourse to an equivocation rather than a lie direct shews a
certain regard to truth: for though an equivocation be preferred to truth,
