And in elucidation of our Author's purpose I can find nothing more
characteristic – nothing more emphatic than his own words:
"I have taken the principle of utility for my
"guide. I will follow wheresoever it leads me.
"No prejudices have forced shall force me to quit the road.
"No interest shall seduce me. Ņo superstitions
"shall appal me. Writing Addressing myself to a
"free and enlightened nation, what have I to fear.
"The promotion exercise augmentation of the public general felicity which is
"the object which is the motive of my inquiry. This
"shall be so plain, that those who would persuade
"men to the contrary, shall not be able. How
"shall this be? By opening my thoughts breast, by casting my
"offerings at the feet of the public, without reserve.⊞ ⊞ I write not to an Athenian mob nor to a fanatic rabble
"I write to some those many, who were my its merit ever so many
"times greater than I can hope, are would be worthy to be
"its my judges."
There are properly speaking but two parties
distinction of in Morals, or Politics and
in Religion: and to others through all
of them the those.
The one is for the free unlimited exercise
of reason: the other is against it.
I profess myself of the former:† I hold
myself to be more in union amity communion with, I
feel myself more cordially disposed towards
those who agree with me in that one point than
with those who disagreeing with me
in that, agree with me in every other.
These with respect to each other are the
two grand Heresies: the others
are but Schisms.
