If the Freight and Expenses to be deduced from the selling
price, say fs:7.- pr Cwt., the Nation will have paid fs:15,158,950,
or £606,358,-, for articles whose prime cost was only fs.7,537,819,
or £301,512,- Stg.

The average value of Cod-fish in the Newfoundland Market
being 10s/- pr Cwt. there is a national sacrifice of capital,
double that invested, in this species of commerce.

Independently of the difference of cost, the difference of
quality in favor of the American Cod, is remarkable. On an
average of 5 years, from 1826, 60 1830,
American Cod-fish produced in the Colonial Market, fs.47.35 pr Cwt.
French fishery do. fs.26.95 pr do.

so that, the effect of the system is, not only to bring an article
into the market at an enormous cost, but, of an inferiority
of 75 9/13ths pr Cent in quality.

The following statement gives the amount of Colonial
Importations, from 1826 to 1830, shewing that notwithstanding
the large sacrifices which are made, to support the French fisheries,
nearly one third of the French Colonial consumption is supplied by foreigners.
