increase 1,292,088 Tons.
Of these results, the most remarkable is, the great decline of
the Tonnage employed in foreign Commerce with France; for had
the foreign Trade merely increased with the increase of population,
instead of a diminution of nearly 170 thousand Tons, there would
have been an augmentation of nearly a similar amount; – that is
to say, – instead of having only 530 thousand Tons engaged in
foreign trade, France would have had nearly 900 thousand
Tons; – and this, without taking into account the increased
wealth and producing power, of which the enormous addition
to the Coasting Tonnage, and increase of Coast Fishing, are
remarkable evidence. The Tonnage, as regards Great
Britain, has undergone the following changes.
The whole amount was, in 1787 ... 87,563 Tons
in 1830 ... 144,909 Tons
increase ... 57,346 Tons.
But in 1830 – 59,539 Tons were in the Packet Service.
