General Statement
The object of the Deontologist is to add instruct the Inquirer
in the management of the affections so that they may be made
most subservient to his own well-being. He has pains & pleasures of
his own with which the world has no concern – he has pains & pleasures
which grow out depend on his intercourses with mankind – and it is in both these
relations to give pleasure such as a donation as that it may be the progenitor
of other pleasure – & to give pain such a direction that if possible
it may be made a source of pleasure, – or at all events that
it may be made as light & bearable and as transitory as possible that the
Deontological moralist pours out his instructions.
Abstractedly they may be reduced to a single sentence Inquiry –
At what cost of nature pain or sacrifice of future pleasures is a present pleasure purchased!
What in payment of future pleasure may be anticipated be a present pain?
In Out of this examination Morality consist must be developed
Temptation is the present pleasure – punishment is the future pain –
Sacrifice is the present pain – Enjoyment is the future recompense –
The questions of virtue & vice are most th for the most part reduced
to the weighing that which is, – & against that which will be – The virtuous man has
a store of happiness in coming time – the vicious man has prodigally spent
his revenues of happiness – Today the vicious man seems to
have a balance of pleasure in his favor – tomorrow the balance
will be adjusted – & the day after it will pass be ascertained to be wholly to in
the account favor of the virtuous man. Vice is a spendthrift flinging
away happiness what is far better than wealth – or health – or youth –
or beauty – namely happiness because none all of these without happiness are of little value without.
Virtue is a prudent economist that gets back all her
outlay with interest
