In 1820, the Shipping of France above the 100 Tons, destined for long
voyages, was estimated a 900 vessels, and the average value of these,
60,000 francs, – say 54 Millions in all: – average number of Sailors 20,
say 18,000 men; – and those employed in labor connected with Shipping, at
about an equal number, – say 36,000 in all. An annual expenditure
in wages, food, repairs, equipments and Insurance, – about 30,000 francs, –
say 27 Millions in all. The amount of Exportation, 70 thousand Tons
of Goods. Their average Freight, 40,000 francs, or 36 Millions in all.

From 1825 to 1829, the whole amount of vessels and Tonnage
entered inwards and outwards, in all the Ports of France, was,
