The principle of Utility – or rather the greatest happiness
principle – has this advantage over every other – that whenever the
divergences of opinion which recogniseing another standard do using it is in the field of utility. If there
be any point of union in harmony between them it is exhibited then.
Even where men agree to recognise a certain authority – a text – a Law
the example it will be found far more difficult to induce them to
assu co-incide as to its interpretation than as to the decision of the question
what is submitted to the Deontological Code Law – Let the articles of a
Code (depend not on authority & removed from the application of the
utilitarian facts) or let various the Texts of a Volume on morality – be appealed to on any
occasion as the standard of rectitude & it will be seen that they will those who
with a far smaller number of suffrage recognise the authority of the Code or the Text-books will be far less
unanimous in their suffrage – than would be the same number of
persons who, making utility their standard, should be appealed referred to him than
a decision on the case in point.
Under the influence of the blind, – instructive principle impulse
profit Law, in truth from the beginning of the world been used in the
habit of the greatest happiness principle – & wherever they
have acted reasonably that principle has been their guide. They have
been led use by it, without being aware of its existence – as, on a
clouded day, men walk in the light without being able to
the brightness to the uprising of the sun. Helvetius is the first
Moralist who turned with steady eye to the Utilitarian principle
He saw its radiance & its power, – & walked in its beams reasoned under its influence.
