We have subjoined (Appendix ) an Official Return from the
English Customhouse, showing the amount of Duties received under the
head of each European country, from which Importation takes place,
in evidence of the importance of the Trade with France, in financial
considerations. The average Duty recovered is Cent perCent, – On
some articles, and those composing a considerable part of the Import,
(Brandy, for example,) it is 500 pr Cent on the value of the article.
The manufactures imported from France, are those on which the
highest duties are levied. In fine, the French Trade, limited and
restricted as it is, produces above one ninth of the whole of the
Customhouse Revenues of Great Britain.

The great majority of French Writers attribute the prosperity
of England directly to her prohibitory system: – but, it must be
confessed, the extent of her Importations, and the proportion they
bear
