1. Keep out thoughts 1. to immediately by diverting the mind from the thoughts themselves
2. By do from objects associated with them.

§.2. Power which the mind has is capable of having over the thoughts – how to exercise
it with most effect.

To rid himself of an unpleasant object of the physical corporeal class
a man may employ direct means: he may either remove
himself out of the sight presence of it, for example out of the
sight of it, or he may remove it or cause it to be removed
out of the his presence. When the fatal apple was presented to her,
Eve might either have turned her back upon it, or made a present
of it to an attendant pig.

Not so if the object is of the mentally perceptible or spiritual psychological class: an idea, presented by recollection simple memory or by imagination. In this case there is a man has no direct way of getting rid
of it. He has but one way and that an indirect one: viz.
to fasten attract his mind to some other object of a different nature.

If without having hold of such other object, his thwa endeavour
is to expel drive out of his mind the object in question,
so long as the endeavour continues so long it must and
will be frustrated: for, instead of parting with it, so long as
this endeavour continues, so long does he hold keep holding the object in
view.
