101

Dream not that men will move their little finger to serve
you unless their advantage in so doing be obvious to them. Men never did
so, & never will while human nature is made of its present materials.
But they will desire to serve you when by so doing they can
serve themselves & the occasions on which they can serve themselves
by serving you are multitudinous. The intelligent will
catch at opportunities which escape the eyes of the vulgar –
and in these mutual services there is virtue – & there is
little virtue beyond them – & happily of such virtue there is
more than those who do not possess it are willing to acknowledge
or able to believe.
