A statement of the Exports and Imports between France and
England from the Year 1698 to the present time, extracted from
the Official returns of the English Custom House, is given in the
Appendix (D.C) The years of Peace are also distinguished from
those of War – and an Average is given, taken during the whole
of the seperate periods through which peace or War has continued.
It will appear singular that during a greater portion of
the early half of the last century the amount of Exports and
Imports should have been nearly as great in the times of
War as of Peace – and even that during some years of War
they should be greater than in the years of Peace that preceded
or followed them. In the whole period of 130 Years
there appears to be only 14, viz: 1702, 1756, 1778, 1779, 1782, 1796, 1798,
1799, 1805, 1809, and 1823, in which the Official value of legal
Imports from France was exceeded by that of British Exports
to that Country. Under the influence of the Eden Treaty, the
the amounts were rapidly approximating, and there can
be little doubt they would soon have become nearly equal.
The Tariff of 1791, and the War of 1793 almost wholly annihilated
the Trade, which however returned by large and
sudden transactions, in 1801 and 1802 by Imports from France
to the amount of £2,366,000. in 1812 and 1814 to the amount
of £3,220,000, and in 1805 and 1810 by Exports to France
amounting to £1,430,000
