to others is one of the duties & most difficult, – & a difficult one whose exercise is demanded
by extra-regarding prudence. The complacency with which men in general
are of displaying their intellectual superiority –
the satisfaction felt by the possession especially in the regions of ridicule often betrays them into
disregard for the feelings they wound, – & the reaction of those
wounded feelings upon themselves. Happy he, who tempted
to say a clever but malicious thing, has his own self-love
so completely controlled by the benevolent principle as to
to refrain from giving it utterance be able on any occasion to check the utterance of that which would distress another – & happier still the
man who is in whom the powers of wit & ridicule have been so habitually constantly
subjected become subjected to the influence of the beneficence, as to feel no disposition

the influence, but beyond the by a temperament which
has become habitual beyond the influence, – & even beyond
the suggestions of that infirmity, – which its ex
which exasperates others its victims far more than it injures
them – & is often repaid by a malevolence more intense
because its fears do not allow it to break forth [in
ordinary expression. Pleasantry, – the gay & joyous
