Extra Self-regarding prudence

The hoarding money is among the mistakes of imprudence
& miscalculation. With reference to ourselves to treasure it
up unproductively is an obviously false estimate of interest. As
a means of enjoyment the transfer of the affections from the
sense is reality to that reality which is but only the instrument by which the reality
is obtainable will in its consequences reduces many pleasures to one –
& that one disassociated from or even opposed to the pleasures of
others. The sensibility to pleasure being deadened by non exertion
– the vague & undefined anticipation of good to be obtained
by money, as a source of pleasure is magnified/ One after
another the individual pleasures vanish – & as they vanish
the pleasure of possessing the source of so many pleasures takes
stronger &d stronger root in the affections – it becomes in itself
an object of desire, – independent of & above all others – & at last excludes them all.

Here then is a man who has disconnected the self
regarding principle from the social – & experimentalized upon endeavored to obtain for himself
an additional portion of good by alienating others from and
cooperation in his own happiness. And the consequences are
as Deontology, – & philanthropy would desire they should be.
He has made a foolish bargain – in the interest of self.
He has lost much to obtain little good, – & that little good a is made almost an evil in by
its being associated with the anxieties which the attend the
having but one, single solitary source of pleasure. Indifferent
to their the good opinion of others, – that opinion retaliates
a sentiment that is not indifferent. For however men may
desire to escape the judgment mankind – escape is impossible
– the of opinion drags all men inexorably before its
bar.
