The subjects Among the more determinable sources of inferiority & superiority may be considered under in position
the several headings as more practicably
1 Age, Wealth, Rank & Political Power are particularly prominent
2. Wealth
3. Wisdom/knowlege
4. Talent
5. Rank
& 6 Political power
7. Expectation
And all these again may be divided
The difference in age is easily definable, & in extreme some cases towers
over every other distinction. The power of the nurse, for example, over
the infant, however wealthy, or high born, the infant may be, is almost
limitless. In general estimate it may be remarked that the
superiority conferred by age is frequently exaggerated – or rather the
points of character in which youth may be fairly considered as
possessing greater excellence, are not sufficiently taken into the
account. The intellectual faculties mental powers are generally improved by
the teachings of time at all events up to a certain period
of man's existence – but this can hardly be said of the generous benevolent
affections tendencies.
