is not less than £600,000 to £700,000. – Per Annum. – The
introduction of Cotton Twist from the South and East, is
calculated at from £150,000 to £200,000 a year.
Some data for estimating the amount of Smuggling into
France, may be found in the facts we have collected, as to the
fraudulent introduction of French Goods into England. According
to the best returns we have been able to get, the smuggling
of French Silks may be estimated at an Average of £200.000
a year. Now, of these, the Seizures average £9,000 pr annum:
the real risque would thus appear to be 5 per Cent. The risk
incurred in France may be safely estimated at 5 per Cent greater than
in England: – hence, leaving out the article of Cotton Twist, (which
is only partially excluded) – the introduction through the Northern
Frontier of the Atlantic Ports would be, estimating the seizures
at £15,000 pr. annum, – £700,000. Stg.
The sale price of the articles seized in England, however,
bears a higher proportion to their value, than those confiscated
in France, and, if that difference be allowed to compensate for
the higher rate of smuggling premium, the illicit introduction
of British Stuffs would be scarcely less than One Million Pounds
Sterling per annum.

so
