conquered, – and, as the Committee state, "they have now to compete
"with those who are always on the spot, – who carry on their fishing
"concerns in small boats, at a trifling cost, – who pay no charge
"of outfit, – who lose no time in voyages, – who employ the cheaper
"labor of children, women and old persons, – who have their drying
"and salting establishments in the neighbourhood, – and, who
"can accommodate all their proceedings to the urgency of
"circumstances." The Committee call upon the Deputies
of the French Station, to give them such a sum from the public
purse, as shall counterbalance the advantages possessed by their
competitors, – and the Deputies consented to do so.
In 1787, the Cod Fishing employed 53,800 Tons,
the Whale do. employed 3,720 Tons
the Herring do. employed 8,602 Tons
the Mackarel do. employed 5,166 Tons
the Sardine do. employed 3,060 Tons
Other Fish do. employed 12,320* Tons
In 1816, the following Premiums were accorded to the French
Fishery, – fs. 50.- pr man, for the Cod Fishery
fs. 15.- pr man, for the Herring Fishery (petite pêche), and fs. 24.-
pr Quintal, on the introduction of the Fish into the Colonies.

* M. Dupin states that the Fisheries of Dieppe produced an annual
average of fs. 5,325,000, from 1783 to 1792. In 1820 their produce was
only fs. 2,421,400. Those of Fecamp fs. 813,000, St. Vallery fs. 723,500, Fréport
fs. 429,000, making a total of fs. 4,386,900. In the ports of Caux, they
consist of fs. 1,256,000 Cod; fs. 694,000 Mackarel, fs. 1,242,600 Herrings,
and fs. 1,192,000 fresh Fish. In the Arrondissement of Havre, in 1824, the Fisheries
produced, – Whale fishery fs. 395,000, Cod fs. 419,409, Herring fs. 360,000,
Mackarel fs. 292,000.
