The modes of gratification & annoyance are two:
Physical – actinging on the bodily organs
Mental – acting by impressions on the mind
The occasions of benevolent action & abstention are
Incidental or
Permament
The permanent occasions are Domestic or
Extra-domestic
and the domestic are again divided into those of Kindred, which have their
origin of at the beginning of the social relation, & are dissolved only when that
relation is terminated by death, – or those of master connected such as exist between masters & servants –between
hosts & visitors, which are entered upon, – & closed at the will of either or
both the parties.
The instruments by which effective benevolence gives evidence
of its existence are words & deeds. Words as exhibited
either in oral or written discourse. Deeds which have an
influence upon the pains or pleasures of others.
