Abstential benevolence requires that no question should
be put the answer to which would, or might expose the answerer
to considerable or lasting inconvenience.
Such might be the consequence of inquiries as to
the religious sentiments of an individual. If the Inquiry He would
gain little if his opinions were found in accordance with
those of the Inquirer & of other persons present. He might
lose much if they were found discordant. Even without
culpable intention much damage might be done – & the
damage might be irreparable.
The very question has more of intolerance in it than
even of curiosity.
