Ch. or §. Modes of annoyance by afflictive unpleasant or useless
information
Avoid the causing annoyance caused by the communication of unpleasant,
afflictive, or useless information.
Under this head note first the general rule: – avoid to
produce annoyance by unpleasant information.
Note secondly The general exception except is where the evil
of the annoyance promises to be outweighed by the good
produced by the information. The persons susceptible of the
good are 1. the person to whom this information is conveyed:
2. the person by whom the information is conveyed,
and 3. other persons at large.
If it be supposed that no good in any shape can accrue
from the information to any person of any one of
these classes, it is clearly the case to which the application
of the rule is absolute: to convey the information
is inconsistent with benevolence and beneficence.
Remain for consideration But of these are the cases where against to set against the
evil from the information, good in some shape and [quantity [ 225 2

communication of disagreeable news is necessary to the adoption of
certain measures of prudence whose adoption is of preponderating
importance – in but for the communication more pain would be
suffered than if the communication had not been made, – when
some important object was is to be accomplished by him who
makes the communication, – or some important benefit to be
obtained by individuals in society at large – or such occasions
the pain must be inflicted, – for it infliction will prevent greater
pain – or secure greater pleasure more than sufficient to
counterbalance the pain.
