Benevolence in while Inducements – None of objects
nearest first. Instead of Benevolence and Beneficence any Benevolent Beneficence.
Effective Benevolence. Positive
§. 6. Beneficence and Benevolence, do. positive and negative
Beneficence consists in contributing to the comforts of
our fellow creatures: Benevolence is the desire so to do. Beneficence
is not a virtue except in so far as accompanied
with benevolence. The body food we eat contributes to the comfort of those
by whom the flesh of him it is eaten. But the comfort of the
eater of such does not render the food virtuous.
Benevolence may be a virtue without being accompanied
by beneficence, for the desire may exist without any power
of carrying it into effect. But benevolence is not a virtue
any farther than, as occasion serves, it is accompanied
with beneficence: if when occasion serves correspondent beneficence is not
exercised, the such not exercise it is a proof that the desire was not in reality
present, or that if present it was inoperative – it was so faint as to be of
no use.
