production of good. Ill appropriated as are, in many cases
the legal sanctions of punishment to offences – the application
of reward by that same sanction is even more irregular &
imperfect. With the growth of intelligence – with the
spread of morality – the state of public opinion will
become more & more accordant with the deontological code
principle – and the popular affections will be more busied
in necessitating distinguishing real from spurious
virtue, – & in giving to the virtue that is real its
fit reward recompense. Meanwhile, to that end we must labor –
each for himself & as far as he is able – marking out
for it his highest approbation in the conduct of others those
actions which have produced, – or are likely to produce
the greatest sum of happiness – & visiting with his
loudest reprobation that conduct which leads to, or
creates the greatest amount of misery. Ву these
means every man will do something to make
the popular sanctions more useful, – healthful – active
& virtuous. In The alliance of true morality with
the great interests of mankind, – mankind will
soon discover – & the discovery once generalized,
it will not be in the power of fallacy, – of
dogmatism – or despotism to prevent its
influence or universal action.
