To abstain from bringing into view the infirmities of
others was exhibited as one of the marks of negative efficient benevolence.
To hold up to view the accomplishments or merits of another
occupies the corresponding place in the regions of positive
benevolence. But as has will have been naturally deduced from
preceding observations, – while in the negative part of
the field of action there are no restrictions, – or limitations –
since the avoidance of action is the avoidance of evil, – in
the positive part care must be taken that the
good which is done or the pleasure which is purchased
– do not cost more than its worth – by leading to
the destruction of a greater amount of good, – or the
creation of a greater portion of evil.
