Whatever object of good is to be accomplished by
our interference, will be best accomplished by the point instruments of
veracity & by the avoidance of exaggeration. If we have
to speak of actions let them therefore be represented as they are, without
the addition of those terms of vituperation or of applause
by which men are led astray from the action itself to
our estimate of the action. The best testimony is the
simple statement of facts – the worst is that which envelops distorts
facts in & tortures facts into a predetermined shape, &
communicates them with a judgment tacked to them. Now the man who in speaking seeking my opinion of the conduct of another
gives his own opinion in putting the question to me, – really does
all he can to deprive me of the power of judging truly & of expressing
myself honestly.
