The Returns from the different Ports of France do not
always distinguish the different Spirits which are fraudulently
exported. From Fecamp, however, there is a Return of
5,863 1/3 Gallons of Geneva, and 10,186 Gallons of Branch.
If the same proportion exist in the Ports of Dunkirk,
Boulogne and Calais, – i:e: – if one third of the exportation
of Spirits, be of Geneva, the smuggling exportation of 1831
amounted to about 40,000 Gallons in all, while, it appears,
the whole quantity that paid Duty in 1831, was only
30,802 Gallons. The smuggling from Holland direct,
forms no part of this calculation. – Inasmuch as the prime
cost of Geneva is little more than half that of Cognac
Brandy, while the Duty levied in England is the same,
the motive to smuggling is greater, as the capital invested
is less in the case of Geneva, than in that of Brandy.
