A proposition concerninghaving for the subject the geometrical figure called
a sphere is a proposition having for its subject all
bodies such bodiesindividual as canare termed with propriety be termed spherical,
bodies, as likewise all such spaces as can withindividual portions of space
properly be termed spherical spaces: and so in the
case of a cone, a cube and so forth,
In so far as any such individual portions of matter
in space are actually in existence, the proposition
is actually true. In so far as any such portion of
matter or space aremay be considered as likely to even in existence
is as capable of coming into existence, it has a sort may be considered as having
of potential truth, which as soon asshould it ever happen to any such portion
of matter or space to come into existence would
immediately be consisted into actual truth.
In point of fact no portion either of matter
or space as agrees exactly with a description given by mathematicians of the sort of figure called a sphere
or space ever has come into existence (there seems
reason to believe) ever has come into existence. But
by this circumstance, to the mere purpose of<add>absolute</add> correct expressionthough in a strict sense, the
truth of all those propositions concerning the sort of
figure called a sphere is destroyed, yet in no
degree is the utility of any of these either destroyed
or so much as lessened in no degree is the truth of
them destroyed or lessened to any with reference to any useful purpose: with
reference to any purpose, or in any sense, that a
perfectly useless one.
