Chrest. Tab. II Conclusion
In regard to those abbreviative contrivances, what may
very well happen be found to be the case is that some apply principally or
exclusively to this or that subject – to the solution of this
or that particular problem or groups of problems: and
in so far the invention of the mode of abbreviation is
the invention of the mode of solving the problem, and
thus the abbreviative part and the efficient part are
in a manner confounded. But on the one hand at any rate it is instances
there will be in which this sort of confusion has no place not in any next every instance that this sort of confusion
has place, and on the other hand, a number
there are of those contrivances for modes of condensation, which
are continually employed and employed on all occasions alike.
True it is again that in the manner of in the explanation given
of the several substitutions by whic which the condensation
is performed the characters the instruments themselves
by which it is performed can ot but be brought to
view. But, for their particular purpose no one of them
need be brought to view more than once, or some
other small and limited number of times: and between
this use of them for the mere purpose of explanation
and the constant use of them through the whole of every
page, how great the difference can will not but be to the
mind of a young Scholar, is sufficiently obvious enough.
