Consider. Peculiar sign descending method principle would require definition which in so
far as new would be a per Cent a new language, but the old sign
would save for the expression of it. The definition would be substitute
to the definition: this per Cents would be an abbreviation.
The sort of intellectual instrument the key those
proposed the key or rather the apparatus of keys would be very far from being compleat
if in its purpose it did not include the fictions
all the several fictions of which in the framing of this
branch of art and science have been invented and
employed.
For illustration, without looking any further, two
may here be mentioned suffice: viz. the convenience of the algebraical
method forms into geometrical, and the contrivance
called by its first inventor Newton, and from him
by the British Mathematicians the the method of fluxions
and by its second but not less original inventor
Leibnitz, and from him by all the mathematicians
of all other countries, the differential and integral calculus.
