Chrest. Tab II
Square Root Cube Root
Lastly, as to fluxions: a modification of the Algebraic form a mode of calculating, invented
under that name by Newton, under the name
of the differential and integral calculus, or mode of calculation
by Leibnitz, whose denomination is employed every
where but language but the English.
The original work of Newton is not at present within the reach.
But the word employed on this occasion in English
being in all English books the same, no doubt such
suspicion can arise as that in the way wiill of
the good teacher any difference in the use of so elementary
and radical an expression, any departure from
the usage language of the great Master can have had place.
In a logical and grammatical point of view this
word is not exactly the word which the object intended
to be denoted required for the expression of it: instead
of the clear idea meant to be conveyed presented, to an unpractised
mind the idea presented is very apt
to be a confused one: a confusion by which the
very entrance very first steps taken on this ground are but too apt to be involved.
By a word or two of explanation, this cloud confusion might have
been effectually dispelled: but nowhere is any
such explanation to be found.
The agent or operating instrument the product one of action or, and the product or
operation – and the product or result of it a on
every occasion all these entities objects are as necessary essent
as they are disting distinct and distinguishable
from each other. But owing to the poverty of the
language, i.e. to the want of clear discernment on the
part of the founder this generality of those who begun and of those
who continue to use it, the two last of these objects are
apt to be confounded
under one name.
