Chrest. Tab. II Inserenda
Again When upon after having being required to take one of these
quantities that are by so much less than nothing, and
multiply it by another of these quantities that are less
than nothing – 2 for example by 3 the product is composed
of a number of quantities, all of them greater than
nothing a quantities viz. 6 in number being
exactly the same number of quantities all greater
than nothing that would have been the result if instead
of quantities all of them less than nothing, an equal
number of quantities all of them greater than nothing
is employed what is the consequence? We remain astonished
and confounded. But the more astonishing the
matter of science thus imbibed the greater the glory attached
in the acquisition of it: and to comfort him make amends
to him – under his confusion is the use and benefit of this glory,
the glory of having by dint of hard labour succeeded
in treasuring laying up in his mind this mass of palpable
nonsense under the vast and denominative name of science this mass of
palpable nonsense.
In so far as language which on ordinary occasions in ordinary use has
is used in one sense one sort of signification, is on the occasion of scientific
instruction used in another, an effect similar to that
which by the species of secret discourse called cypher
is poss produced in any mind which is not in possession to which the key has not been communicated
of the key is produced in the mind of to which instruction
in the language science has lately begun to be communicated administered.
