Chrest. Tab. II Inserenda
To him who possesses is in possession the key, the language of the
cypher, obscure mysterious and perhaps nonsensical as
to the his conception of the very person it would
be otherwise is clear, correct, and instructive. But
does it ever happen to him to entertain to entertain any such expectation to expect that to any
person who is not a possessor of that necessary instrument
it should present itself in that more satisfactory
character? So soon as any such expectation a persuasion were
to any such effect were entertained by him, so soon
would an assurance a persuasion equally strong be possessed entertained by him
that the purpose for which alone the language had
with so much pains been devised was already defeated.
To the experienced practitioner or instructor
the acquisition which he has formed with particular
the particulars which he has been accustomed to have in view
on the occasion of which the technical and inapposite language
in question has customarily been employed which and which alone in speaking of the subject it has
been usual to him to employ and have employed is
the cypher: the to this cypher the particulars which
on these same occasions it has been usual for him
to have in view are compose the key. What wonder if
among those by to whom while not as yet in possession of the
key the cypher is delivered comes to be pored over these are the
number of those by to whose minds whom the words language of the cypher has
imparted clear ideas is comparatively so inconsiderable.
