Chrest. Tab. I

this method is applicable to these objects, or not
if yes, so much the better: if not, why not?

Applied to the purpose of demonstration, The Mathematician has a method of his own, for the
designation of which the name of the method of exhaustion has
been employed by him. Applied to the combined purposes
of explanation exposition and invention the logician has a
method belonging to himself, for the designation of which
the this name denomination has been employed.
For the performance of this operation the first step to be
taken consists in the bringing together likewise in one and the same point of view under one view
the whole list of the objects on which the ultimate operation
is to be performed. These brought together into
one groupe, the individuals those subjects of the geometrical kingdom of which it is composed
will like so many those of the vegetable and of the animal
kingdom be ready for to undergo the process be subjected to the
operation process of classification. Some property, which
a number of them are seen to possess in common
will form a principle of union in virtue of which
by means the bonds of some common appellation
they will bound up together in a correspondent
groupe. In looking them over groupe by groupe
some one or more properties will be observed by him
as belonging to all of them without exception, and
thus as having the effect of combining them allv into one all comprehensive groupe. But when
once the he has got under his eye component constituent elements all the parts
appertaining that are do or can appertain to any such factitious whole, for
making division of that whole into two parts portions or masses as
under one or other of which all these elements will
shall without exception, the logician has a method
of his own: and to this it is that the appellation
of the method of exhaustion or exhaustive analysis has been applied.
