Chrest. Tab. II

Suppose therefore a mathematician, taking for the subject
of his propositions, a curve of the fiftieth order: and
suppose that in the nature of things in the physical
world no any such curve ever never has been or can be exemplified:
an exemplified either in any individual mass of
matters, or on the path described by the motion of any individual
mass of matter in the field of space.

That as none no one of these propositions there can be
any use, will it is believed be recognized at the first
word. But neither is there any truth in it. A universal
which has no one particular no one individual
object contained in it is a sign by which nothing
is designated: a more amply word.

It is In point of truth it stands exactly upon a the
footing with the celebrated proposition of the sort of
Logic called literal Logic. Chimæra bombinans in
vacuo, possit comedere secundas intentiones. A
Chimæra exploding in empty space is capable
of devouring second intentions. The literal
logic proposition is not given, because no such chimæra
is in existence. The mathematical proposition
concerning the curve of the 50th order is not true:
because of any such curve no exemplification is no such curve no individual belonging to this
species anywhere to be found. In logical mood and figure
the chimæra proposition may have been made the
subject of demonstration: but it is not the more true.
In mathematical mood and figure the curve proposition
may have been taken for the subject of demonstration,
but it is not the more true.
