Chrest. Tab. II Inserenda
It is more strictly correct to say that it is not true than that
it is not useful. In so far as it to any one who repeated it, it becomes
a source of amusement, even or pleasure, in so far the chimæra proposition
was a useful one: and just so far would the curve proposition be.
A proposition in mathematics is therefore no further
mathematically true than in so far as it is physically
exemplified: and being so exemplified is also a physical
one.
Being so exemplified it is both mathematically and
physically true.
But it may be physically true without being practically
useful.
A proposi string of propositions in and by which it is
shown what space length of time is occupied by in
the passage of a ray of light from one of a Jupiter's Satellites
to this our globe may be practically useful:
because it may have a be subservient to Uranological
topography (see Tab. 2. Stage V.) and thence to navigation
contributing its cause a ship and its crew
from their departure, which might for want of such information
might be their lot. But a string of propositions
in which it were to be shown what length of time is
occupied in the passing of a ray of light from one of the
stars in the milky way could not be practically useful
as for in no way could it contribute to navigation,
to or any other practical art as above.
