a physical one.
Being so exemplified it is
both mathematically and
physically true.
But it may be physically
true without being practically
useful.
A string of propositions in and
by which it is shown what
length of time is occupied by
in the passage of a ray of light
from one of Jupiter's Satellites
to this our globe may be practically
useful: because it may
be subservient to chronological
topography (see Tab. II. p.V)
and thence to navigation capability
to sail
or saving save a ship and its crew
from that destruction which for want
of such information might be
their lot. But a string of propositions
in which it were to
be shewn what length of time
is occupied in the passing of
a ray of light from one of
the stars in the milky way
could not be practically useful:
for in no way could it contribute
to navigation or any
other practical use as above.
