30 April 1815
Chrest. Tab. II

By an inapposite or ambiguous expression or two, situated placed
at the threshold of the science, who can say what multitude
may not have been deterred from the attempt
to enter upon it.

This shortness compactness the phrase the square root is and
instead of the root of the square: as house-top instead of
the in top of the house. But in what elementary book
on mathematics is any such this little explanation to be found.
In consequence a root of a square form, is the idea
that presents itself to the learner: a tap root for example
such as that of a radish shred down till
it is cut into this shape: and so in the case of a
cube-root. And any such root what can it have to
do with numbers. Here then is darkness visible: and
to a many an eye impenetrable.
