11 April 1815
Chrestom. Tab. II Inserenda

Throughout its whole exposure From beginning to end not only at the end but at
the very beginning original darkness unenlightened – fiction
untranslated
into the language of simple truth – abbreviated expression
unexplained by their unabbreviated equivalents – expressions
of extreme generality unexplained by indications of
familiar particulars contained within them – covers covers the face of
the algebraical deep.

Note

The expression the square root
employed for shortness instead of the root of the
square, and never explained by reference to it suffices
to fill produce in the mind of the learner a vertigo to which not unfrequently
it may happen to
no cure is ever applied. may happen never to receive a cure. The fiction by
which the case of the square root and the cube root
form is predicated attributed of numbers receives thus far from
the material image a sort of imperfect elucidation,
a sort of delusive glimmering. But when that image
being discarded the next power biquadratedenomination given to the
next power is viz. the 4th. supposes two cubes – two dies for example
to be put one upon another – lb/> and when at the mention
made of the next highest power viz. the fifth, that and
image is discarded and no other image thenceforward
substituted, perplexity and confusion is the result in every mind
which attempts to discover any instructive analogy
between the
figure presentings
series of numerical
relations andv the figure presenting
fiction which at
the fourth term of
the series is found
to be no longer applicable:
in algebra anything better
than a set of arbitrary rules of which the rationale grounds
and reasons are undiscoverable.
