Note

The expression the square root
employed for shortness instead of the root
of the square, and never expained by
reference to it, suffices to produce
in the mind of the learner
a vertigo to which not unfrequently
it may happen to
no cure is ever applied. The
fiction by which the case of the
square root and the cube root, form is predicated
attributed of numbers,
receives thus far from the natural material
image a sort of imperfect elucidation,
a sort of delusive glimmering
of light. But when that image being
discarded the denomination
given to the next power viz. the
4th. supposes two cubes – two dies, for
example, to be put one upon another
and when at the mention made of the
next highest power, viz; the fifth, that
image is discarded, and no other image
thenceforward substituted, perplexity and
confusion is the result in every mind
which attempts to derive discover any instructive
analogy between the series of numerical
relation and the figure presenting which
at the fourth term of the series, is found to be no
longer applicable: in Algebra anything better
than a set of arbitrary rules of which the rationale
grounds and reasons are undiscoverable.
