Chrestomathia

Objection to the multitude of the branches included amplitude of the proposed mass of instructions. Answer

To an Upon a distinct and undistinguishing view, the condensing into including so small
a compass as seven years, and that taken at so early immature a time of
life,: so extensive vast a body of learning, will be apt to appear
impracticable.

Of the consideration by and enquiries in which the persuasion of its practicability
is grounded and took its rise and continues to be
grounded an instructive has been given in the Proposal.

In the present instance On the present occasion, a few short references may help
to answer whatsoever difficulty may be apt to be apprehended
on this score.

The exclusion of put upon all exercises of the nature of composition
from the language-learning branch of the field of instruction:
i.e. where the exercise of composition would be commences as being necessary to
ulterior progress, there the Chrestomathic course terminates.

Reasons for this exclusion. 1. At this point the applicability of the new
system with any in respect of the greatest part of its considerable advantage terminates. 2. It is not necessary to the principal
uses of language-learning,
as above. 3. The
foundation being laid for
it in the Chrestomatic
School it will be time
enough to take it up
at the conclusion of the
Chrestomathic course.
4. It belongs to the purely
division of
the field of intellectual instruction,
and on in that
account respect is not adapted
to the demand
and exigencies of the
higher classes middling who are the more
copiously peopled classes.

2. The prodigious power of the Oral New Information System, considered
as in the character of an instrument of acceleration applied to proficiency in language-learning,
according to the an estimate made by a Master in the largest
School in the three kingdoms, by whom it application had been
made of it to language-learning, it saves, and thereby leaves to
be applied to other purposes no less than the 14 parts in 18 of the
quantity of time ordinarily so applied. See Appendix p.
Lecture from Mr
one of the Masters of the High
School Edinburgh.
In whatsoever a degree
this estimate, though the result of great experience may in some eyes appear too sanguine, one to
no eye
third of the saving will not, it is believed, to any eye be to which
the same system of instruction as applied to the lower branches is
familiar – will to no such eye it is believed will a defalcation of being one third of that immense
saving appear excessive present itself itself.
