Springs or Influence of &c
In its expository sense, the term compared appellation
principles of utility contains in it the essence of a proposition
to this effect, viz. In Of Every human being is the
the course taken by conduct is on every occasion
at every moment determined by the interest – notion conception which at
that moment he has of his individual interest.
Corresponding to the three classes into which
of the human mind may be have been distinguished,
the a mans interest any mans every mans interest
may be considered as divided into three portions
viz. his self-regarding interest, his dissocial interest
and his social interest and his dissocial interest.
The use Interest has been its proper In the use made
of it the word interest has been but too apt to be employed
and understood in that confined sense a time
in which it is synonymous to self regarding interest
and from this defect imperfection in the language many have been produced
much confusion and many errors – trouble and disputes
ha which otherwise would never have had
place.
In this largest sense then nothing can be more
plainly under above dispute than this viz. that on every occasion every mans
conduct is determined by the conception which at that
moment he entertains of his interest.
Note that interest itself is but an abridged expression
employed in a certain way to save the in lieu of the word pleasure
and pain: but for its relation to the import of which its non import
would amount to nothing.
