Springs or Influence of &c
The word interest has no meaning but in virtue
of the relation which its import bears: that of the
words pain and pleasure and pain.
Notice requires to be taken of the difference between
the interest of the whole of life and the interest of the moment.
Th In the instance of each and every man it
is to have his momentary interest of the moment that at that
moment the quantity of pleasure in whatsoever shape or shapes experienced engaged by him
should be as great i.e. as intense , and the quantity of pain suffered experienced
by him as small, as possible.
In the interest instance of each and every man it is the interest
his life interest that is the for and during the sense of the
all the moments of which his life shall have been composed
the quantity of pleasure in whatsoever shape or
shapes experienced by him shall have been as great
i.e. as intense (the duration being given) as intense, and
the quantity of pain suffered by him as small as possible.† † ☞ Not to include everlasting life
Every man's conduct On every occasion at each moment every mans
conduct is determined by the conception which at that
moment he entertains of his his own interest. But
in the conception entertained by him in relation to his
own interest may be comprehended on the one hand
in virtue of the purely self-regarding portion of his interest his own life-interest, on the other hand, the interest of
other sensible beings to any extent i.e. in any
number.
