Chrestomathia. W. Thompson of Cork his Queries

1:Are all the lessons (as I
suppose) printed on pasteboard; and in question and
answer?

2: To every object of Nat: Hist:,
Geometry, and Geogy., or its
coloured picture, exhibited,
and do not the pupils sketch
them all on the slates?

3. Of the 5 subjects Drawing
being diffused over the whole
in the first stage, is just one
hour a day devoted to each,
or is the time longer for Nat:
Hist: than for the rest?

4. In these lessons is not
the simplicity of words
as well as of ideas carefully
studied; and are not at the
same time the systematic
arrangements in Nat: Histy:
carefully preserved and explained?

5. Is not the chief (perhaps the
only) danger of this system
lest, like the old schools, the
pupils should not understand,
and it is not the peculiar
duty of the master, by personal
examination as directed by
the Monitors, to be always
alive to this vital point? the
master when examining, never
requiring more than the
purport?

6. Are not Histy: and Biogy:
Chronology taught, without
books or lectures, like the other
branches?.

7. Do not the pupils write
on their slates dates and names
and sketch busts and figures
and costumes of celebrated
men?.

8. As there is no provision
made, (after the first stage) for
additional knowledge of
Nat: Hist:, except incidentally
in Nat: Phil:, Chemy,
&c, could children of 7 years
retain and comprehend all
they could be acquainted
with in Nat Hist:?

9. As there is no provision
made for arithmetic till the
5th stage in the higher branches
and algebra, would not
common Arithmetic, acquired
before 7 years old, be by that
time the 5th Stage, forgotten?
