By what are they to get from his Majesty what they want – these
? Charterists? Answers by making themselves agreeable. And And by what
are they to make themselves agreeable? By looking out
for every wish of his, and making it known to every him –
each man one of them that he is proposed prepared to do anything to give
effect to it. Would he be pleased to have soldiers? That's what to be sure he
what he would would, sure enough: the more of them, the better he would be pleased.
They turn to the right: they turn to the left: they march on.
There they have given: guns: & the giver guns say Pounce? Then comes
Review after Review! how delightful the show. Not even the
Opera can match it! The other Then there are such pretty things to choose
the facings – the epaulettes, the buttons!

A few millions it costs all this will cost, it is true: and
all of them forced out of the pockets of those by whose
labour it was they were made. But what of that? If it had
been left there, it would have been spent in wine;
or in some such low way: and what would there have been for men comme ill faut to look at?

The more they see of these Automatons, the
greater the Monarch's dignity. And what is the expence
which this word dignity will not of itself suffice to
justify? Dignity is a thing which requires money for
its support: who ever denied this? Nobody: the more
the money, the greater the dignity. Who ever denied this?
Nobody. To the quantity of the money necessary for this support,
did ever make attempt to set a limit? Never. Thus they
go on, money and dignity, cause and effect. From dignity
comes demand for money: from money, dignity. From
more dignity comes demand for more money: and so on,
till the last penny that can be extracted from the pocket to which
it belongs of right is extracted. When more money is then asked for, in-
surrection is the answer: insurrection up, then for want of it's support, down drops dignity.
