J.B. to France
Why should I not write thus? The
Charter-the-and--Truth criers are not all Paris; and Paris
itself is not all France.
But if the major part of France, or
even a large majority minority of it, so fond of the yoke
as to offer their necks to it, so let it be.
Preach civil war who will, that will
not I.
Between a pure Commonwealth and
the organized corruption of a mixt monarchy, will with
such an antiseptic as the spirit of the people will
keep injecting into it, the difference I should not
expect to find so great, as to pay for the boundless
horrors presented to view by that name.
All that I say peremptorily is this.
q. Look well to the mode of Election. Liberty of suffrage,
through secresy of suffrage — this it is that saved
you. Should this be taken from you, a civil war,
were the horrors of it equal to those of the Revolutionary
war, would not be too high a price to pay for getting
it back again.
