I suppose A Highwayman (suppose) accosts you in the
road: and after crying Stop! says Dignity. In the highwayman's
mouth would the word dignity justify his taking
away your money or your life? Exactly as well as a King,
but for the word legitimacy.
But dignity is not enough. There must be
Honour — must be Glory. Dignity is to be had
without blood. Not so, Honour. Not so, Glory. Out of
honour, comes demand for blood: but to yield blood
it must have been touched. Glory requires no such
touch. If you want Glory you run all over the world,
cutting and hacking every body that comes across
you: the more blood the more glory.
If the King, who understands the matter as well
as his Queen does, is present at the battle, the glory
is all his own. If, while the battle was fighting, he
was in his bed in the same hemisphere or the opposite one
he shares it with his Generals: the people have found money, & his
Majesty has found auspices.
As to the blood there can never be too much of it, no
more than of the dignity. For the more blood, the more money to
give away, to give to those who cry "The Charter is a truth" — Charter for
ever! Truth for ever! Charter & Truth for ever!
